Temperature Switches
Temperature Switches
A temperature switch is usually found in machinery used to regulate the temperature. If a certain preset temperature is reached, then the switch opens or closes an appropriate contact. Mechanical or electronic switches can be used for these purposes, depending on the requirements. Besides electronic and bimetal switches, our wide range also includes air velocity meters and frost protection thermostats.
Application
We have a number of high-quality switches for many different functions.
Each application has its own requirements, which is why we offer different temperature switch options.
Temperature switches are specifically designed for the use of boilers, heating systems, circulation pumps, burners, and air heaters. They’re typically used across a wide range of general-purpose applications and are very important in industries such as foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, and automotive engineering.
What is a temperature switch?
A temperature switch is a device used to automatically turn on and off the central heating. The temperature switch usually consists of two wires – one straight, and the other bent at 90 degrees.
Types of temperature switches
In most cases, there are two types of switches: mechanical and electronic. Mechanical switches have different models, including bimetal temperature switches and gas-actuated temperature switches. If a high level of accuracy is required to measure something, an electronic switch should be used. Electronic switches allow the user to set their own limits, whereas bimetal temperature switches are limited by their physical construction and don’t offer many options. Gas-actuated temperature switches are especially popular in safety-critical applications.
The difference between a temperature switch and a temperature controller
A temperature controller uses a temperature probe to measure the desired set point and then make adjustments via an actuator. The controller’s job is to control and monitor temperatures and displays information. Temperature switches, on the other hand, respond to certain temperature ranges in order to open or close circuits–they are not responsible for controlling the temperature within a given range.
What is a bimetal temperature switch?
A bimetal is a metal that expands more than most other metals when heated. Temperature switches depend on these metal strips to know whether the temperature is too hot or too cold.
Bimetal temperature switches use a bimetal disc to measure temperature. These consist of two metals with different thermal coefficients, and in most cases, they are either zinc and steel or brass and steel.
When the ambient temperature reaches the set point, the metal discs switch positions. The bimetal disc will return to its original position after it has cooled back down. For electrical latching models, the power supply is disrupted before it returns to its previous position. When they are in their open position, the bimetal discs come into contact due to heat from the environment, and because of this convex shape, they can securely touch each other. Bimetal temperature switches are also commonly used for overtemperature protection or as thermal fuses.
How does our bimetal switch work?
A bimetal switch, typically also called a thermopile or thermocouple, is a type of sensor.
Bimetallic switches are comprised of two strips of different metals. When the two strips are joined together, they create a flat contact and another contact on the bimetal strip. By bending the metal, a thermostat that is actuated by snap-action is created and enables the circuit to be opened or closed.
On some devices, bimetal switches don’t require snap-actions because they contain plates that have been curled in advance. Bimetal switches can be found in automatic circuit breakers, irons, coffee makers, and fan heaters.
Advantages of a gas-actuated temperature switch
One advantage of a gas-actuated temperature switch is that it will provide reliable on/off operation with a simple adjustment of pressures.
Gas-actuated temperature switches are specially designed for high-safety and high-quality applications. Durable, robust, and reliable, they come from WIKA gas-actuated manufacturers who follow ISO 9001. This guarantees the best quality, safety, dependability, and reliability.

A thermal switch or temperature switch is responsible for monitoring the temperature of machinery and equipment. They are used to protect against overheating, overcooling, and other potential operating errors. A thermal switch makes sure that the machinery or equipment doesn’t reach unsafe temperatures.
