Application

Available Units

Underwater connectors are complicated and contain many small, highly-specific parts. To help readers better understand underwater connectors, authors proposed the concept of functional units- or one part that does a specific job. You can also think of them as independent concepts about underwater connectors. Multiple functional units may carry out some functions, but they’re always connected.

Underwater connectors can be classified into six functional groups: connecting, sealing, pressure-balanced, aligning, and locking units. These units can perform the following functions:

Connecting Unit

Connecting Unit provides the true and stable transmission of electricity, or optical signals (or both) between plug and receptacles, with desired specifications. These underwater connectors are in a mating state when connected. The connecting Unit is the primary functional Unit, whose design is demanded to ensure the stability and security of connections as well as reduce power loss on contact interfaces.

Sealing Unit

The Sealing Unit provides the watertight performance you need in underwater connectors. The sealing Unit can be the most important performance unit, so it must maintain a clean, stable and safe environment for the connecting Unit. The sealing Unit should protect connectors from seawater, sediments, grit and other contaminants while preventing leakage in PBOF connectors.

Pressure-Balanced Unit

A pressure-balance valve is able to automatically create pressure so that the internal and external pressures are balanced. This helps reduce or eliminate the difference in pressure between underwater pieces of equipment. An excellent unit will have high reliability and sensitivity.

Aligning Unit

Aligning Unit improves the quality of connection by its mechanical structure. It is an important functional unit to help realize low power loss in underwater connectors, especially for optical connectors.

Locking Unit

The Locking Unit locks plug and receptacle connectors to improve their reliability, stability, and connection quality. It should be able to mate or de-mate them without too much trouble.
